Loan Scam — Illegal Money Lenders & Fake Loan Apps in Malaysia

loan· cases· losses·Updated 22 Jun 2026

Loan scams in Malaysia range from traditional illegal money lenders (Along or Ah Long) who have moved online to sophisticated fake loan apps that harvest personal data. Victims are typically people in financial distress who are desperate for quick cash and willing to bypass licensed channels.

Non-existent loan scams were among the top five most reported fraud types in Malaysia in 2025. Victims lose money through upfront "processing fees" for loans that never materialise, or find themselves trapped in predatory lending with extreme interest rates.

The most common method is the advance-fee loan scam. Scammers advertise easy loans on Facebook, Telegram, or WhatsApp — "Instant loan RM 5,000-50,000, no documentation needed, CTOS blacklist OK." Victims are told the loan is approved but must pay a processing fee, insurance fee, or stamp duty upfront. After payment, the scammer either demands more fees or disappears.

Fake loan apps are a growing threat. These apps are distributed outside official app stores and request excessive permissions including access to contacts, photos, and SMS. Once installed, the app harvests your personal data. If you borrow, the interest rates are extreme (often 30-50% per week), and collection tactics include threatening calls, SMS harassment to all your contacts, and sharing your photos with abusive messages.

Licensed Along operators have also moved online, using social media and messaging apps to reach borrowers while operating outside the law.

How do I check if a lender is licensed in Malaysia?

Check Bank Negara Malaysia's list of licensed moneylenders at bnm.gov.my. Any lender not on this list is operating illegally.

What should I do if I am being harassed by an Ah Long?

Lodge a police report immediately. Do not pay additional money. Contact AKPK at 03-2616 7766 for free financial counselling and debt management support.

Red Flags

  • !No documentation required — licensed lenders always verify income and perform credit checks
  • !Upfront fees before loan disbursement — legitimate lenders deduct fees from the loan, never collect them separately
  • !CTOS/CCRIS blacklist accepted — this is a red flag that the lender is not operating within legal requirements
  • !Apps not on Google Play or Apple App Store — requiring APK sideloading is a major risk
  • !Extreme urgency — "Loan approved in 10 minutes" with no verification process
