Telegram Investment Group Scam — Fake Trading Groups & Signal Channels

investment· cases· losses·Updated 22 Jun 2026

Telegram has become the primary platform for investment scams targeting Malaysians. Fraudulent trading groups and signal channels promise guaranteed returns on forex, cryptocurrency, and stock trading. Victims are lured with screenshots showing fabricated profits, then directed to deposit money into fake trading platforms controlled by scammers.

Investment fraud is already the costliest scam category in Malaysia at RM 1.37 billion in losses for 2025, and Telegram groups are one of the main recruitment channels.

Scammers create professional-looking Telegram groups with names like "VIP Trading Signals Malaysia" or "Forex Profit Club MY." The group is populated with fake members who post fabricated profit screenshots and testimonials. New members are added from Facebook ads, WhatsApp forwards, or spam invitations.

An "analyst" or "mentor" posts daily trading signals, and early participants may even see small returns on initial deposits to build trust. Once victims deposit larger sums, the fake platform either freezes withdrawals (claiming tax or fee requirements) or simply disappears.

Some groups impersonate legitimate financial analysts or use the names and photos of real fund managers. Others create fake partnerships with real brokerages, showing doctored screenshots of official-looking dashboards.

How do I check if a trading platform is legitimate?

Check SC Malaysia's Investor Alert List at sc.com.my. Any platform not registered with the Securities Commission is operating illegally.

Can I recover money lost to a Telegram investment scam?

Contact NSRC (997) immediately — they can attempt to freeze recipient accounts. Recovery depends on how quickly you report and whether funds have been moved offshore.

Red Flags

  • !Guaranteed returns — "100% profit in 30 days" or "zero risk guaranteed" does not exist in legitimate investing
  • !Screenshots of profits — fabricated trading screenshots are trivially easy to create
  • !Pressure to deposit quickly — "Signal expires tonight" or "Only 10 VIP spots left"
  • !Unlicensed platform — the trading platform is not listed on SC Malaysia's register of licensed entities
  • !Cannot withdraw funds — the platform claims you must pay tax, fees, or deposit more before withdrawing

🛡 How to Protect Yourself

  1. 1Verify any investment platform through SC Malaysia's Investor Alert List at sc.com.my
  2. 2Do not deposit money into platforms promoted exclusively through Telegram groups
  3. 3If you cannot withdraw funds, do not deposit more — this is a classic scam escalation tactic
  4. 4Report the Telegram group to Telegram via the in-app report function

📞 How to Report

  1. 1Call 997 (National Scam Response Centre) immediately if you have lost money
  2. 2Lodge a police report at your nearest station
